On Thursday, Kindergarten students headed to Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley. As always, the students enjoyed the bus ride (for some of them, it is the first bus ride they have ever taken) and they also enjoyed the sights and sounds of the zoo. Some students were able to feed the giraffes and other students were able to watch the elephants eat. One of the highlights of the day was the students being able to hear the Lion roar and then pant very loudly, trying to show his dominance. Students also loved listening to the Monkey screech loudly trying to show off in front of the large crowd of people. Students, chaperone's and some teachers were also able to enjoy a ride through the zoo on the train where they were taken past many of the animal exhibits.

Kindergarten students at Washington School had the opportunity to watch caterpillars grow and change into butterflies over the past few weeks. Some classes wrote in journals about the changes that were taking place as the caterpillars ate and grew larger. Then as they hung upside down in a “J” shape ready to spin their chrysalis. Then the long wait for the butterflies to emerge from the chrysalis. Over the last week students observed the new butterflies in their classroom and then finally let them go so they could be in their natural habitat.

6th Grade Class Starts Fundraiser For Tornado Victims Print

Miss Weaver’s 6th grade science class has been studying a severe weather unit focusing on thunderstorms and tornadoes. We would like to raise funds to assist the residents of Moore, Oklahoma after being hit by a devastating tornado on May 20th 2013, around 3:00 p.m. The tornado had wind speeds of over 210 mph and lasted for 40 minutes. The EF5 tornado was over a mile long and destroyed much of the town of Moore, included two schools; Briarwood and Plaza Towers Elementary. 7 children lost their lives in that tornado while at school. We have established a school wide goal of $500.00.  The collection will begin Friday, May 24th and end Wednesday June 5th. We thank you in advance for your support in this fundraiser. Donations can be brought to Reagan Middle School.  If you have any questions please contact Mr. Bullock, Principal at Reagan Middle School.

2013 8th Grade Trip to Springfield Print

Thanks to the generosity of the Dixon Schools PTO, for the second year in a row, the 8th grade class took a field trip to Springfield, Illinois on Tuesday, May 21st. As part of the Reagan Middle School’s social studies curriculum, the teachers like to educate the students about the rich history right here in the capital of Illinois. The teachers also believe that as Illinois citizens it is important for them to visit and learn about the capital of their state. On the trip, the students visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the current Illinois Capitol Building, the Old Capitol Building, Lincoln’s grave, and Lincoln’s neighborhood, among other sites. It was a long day, as students left RMS on charter buses at 6am and didn’t return to the school until 8:30pm, but it was such a great opportunity for the 8th grade students. This year, with the help of Mr. Bishop, many students were able to meet and take a picture with Representative Tom Demmer. From the “Ghost in the Library” at the Lincoln Museum to the rubbing Lincoln’s nose at the tomb, many memories were made on this trip that the students won’t forget for a very long time!
