IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON SCHOOL CANCELLATION NOTIFICATIONS AND PROCEDURESWhen inclement weather happens, Dixon Public Schools may implement one of the following procedures: 1. Cancel classes at all schools for the entire day. 2. Delay the start of classes one or two hours later than normal. 3. Dismiss classes earlier than normal. Dixon Public Schools is changing their automated notification system effective January 1, 2016. We will be using the Lumen notification system, which is tied into our current student software program. This will benefit the District, staff and parents in many ways:
This automated notification system, allows the District to deliver rapid notification of cancellations, emergencies, and announcements to parents quickly and effectively. **If you have a Parent Portal account and need to check or change your child’s information, here are the steps to take: Once logged into the Parent Portal and you have opened your child’s information, scroll down on the left-hand side until you see “Student Reg. Info Update”. Click on “More”. You will see tabs at the top to add or delete information. You can also click on any of the names and it will bring you to a screen to change that information. You will need to click on each name to change information for each person. For example, if the address has changed for the student and the parents, you will need to make sure you select all the names and change it for each person. The building secretary goes into the system and approves the changes. Once approved, it changes the information automatically in our system. We will continue to notify the TV, radio stations, Sauk Valley Textcaster, and Twitter of any weather-related cancellations as well. It will also be on the front page of our website. Please feel free to contact us or your child’s building if you have any questions about this process. Cold and Flu SeasonCold and Flu season is here again! Please remember some everyday preventative measures to help alleviate the spread of germs. Here are some reminders from our district nursing staff.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand rub.
* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
* Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
* If you or your child gets sick with flu-like symptoms, CDC recommends that you or your child stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone. The fever should be gone without the use of fever reducing medication.
* While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
* Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
* REMEMBER: Wash your hands often!!
The CDC recommends a three step approach, first and most important is to get a flu vaccine each year. Secondly, early treatment is especially important for the elderly and the very young, people with certain chronic health conditions and pregnant women. Finally, everyday preventative actions may slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat and lung) illnesses, like flu. |
