Working to eliminate barriers for homeless children and ensuring a free, appropriate public education.

Who is homeless?  Anyone who, due to a lack of housing, lives:

  • In a shelter
  • In a motel
  • In a vehicle
  • In a campground
  • On the street
  • Doubled up with relatives or friends

Where can homeless children and youth attend school?

  • The school in which the child or youth was last enrolled (school of origin).
  • The school in the attendance area where the child or youth is temporarily living.

What is needed to enroll a student in Dixon Public Schools?

    • Parents, guardians, or caregivers should go to the appropriate school to get the child enrolled immediately.
    • If a child is enrolled in Dixon Public Schools, contact the building representative listed below to let them know of your current circumstances.
    • School personnel will work with you to obtain the necessary documents needed for Illinois public school students. NO student will be denied access for not having appropriate documentation.

Can students experiencing homelessness be denied enrollment if the parent/guardian does not have proof of residency?
    • No. The parent/guardian will sign an affidavit stating that the family is staying in temporary accommodations.

What if the parent/guardian does not have the school records for a child experiencing homelessness?

    • The child/youth will be enrolled in school until the records arrive.
    • Our school nurses will work to obtain the student's immunization records from the previous school or wherever they may be located.
    • School secretaries will work to obtain the student?s transcript information from the previous school.

This is a difficult and unpredictable time in the life of homeless youth and families. We will do everything we can to make sure the education of your child remains constant.
