Flu Season Update

  • Illinois is one of 26 states reporting widespread influenza activity currently; very unusual for September.
  • Illinois is experiencing double the amount of flu activity as a typical September.
  • 90+ % of these cases are H1N1, not seasonal flu.

Flu Season Update-Symptoms

Fever AND

  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny/Stuffy Nose

 

Other symptoms may include:

  • Body Aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

 Flu Season Update-Target Groups

 

  • Pregnant women
  • Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
  • Children from 6 months through 24 years of age
    because cases of 2009 H1N1 influenza have been seen in children who are in close contact with each other in school and day care settings, which increases the likelihood of disease spread
  • Persons aged 25 through 64 ears who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.

Flu Season Update-Vaccine

As of September 2009:

  • Children under 10 years old will require 2 doses of the vaccine.
  • Children over 10 years old and adults will require 1 dose.
