Kindergarten and 1st grade students at Washington School were in for a rare treat during the quarterly “Cool Tool” assembly when their teachers took the place of the students to model appropriate and inappropriate behaviors for “Teacher Time” as part of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) that continues to be implemented in the school. PBIS emphasizes clear teaching of behavioral expectations and continual re-teaching of those skills. For younger children, modeling and visual supports are used to help them understand and remember our 3 basic school rules; Be Ready, Be Safe, Be Kind, and how to apply them across the different settings and situations throughout the day. Teachers are also continually learning and improving their classroom management skills as they see the various resources or “Cool Tools” used and PBIS philosophy modeled. Most importantly of all, everyone had a lot of FUN!
