Jefferson School students raised over $4000 for the American Heart Association through their Jump Rope for Heart program.  Over 100 students collected funds for this worthy cause. During our jump rope unit, February 15th-25th, 2011, Jefferson students learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity helps us live longer, healthier lives.  Thank you to all parents for their participation and support.

Jefferson Elementary held their annual school-wide spelling bee on Friday, February 4th at 1:00 pm in the school gymnasium. The selection format for the Bee was a bit different this year since we added a grade level to our building. Classroom Bees were conducted in January. The top two spellers from each classroom then advanced to the written assessment. The top 15 scorers on the assessment became our spelling bee contestants. After the selection process, seven fourth graders and eight fifth graders participated in the school-wide spelling bee.

Contestants and alternates practiced at home, and attended a morning practice with coordinator & pronouncer, Mrs. Bork and committee members & judges Mrs. Bushman, Mrs. Lauer, and Mrs. Tschosik.

We would like to congratulate the Jefferson Elementary School 2011 Spelling Bee

Jefferson School Math-A-Thon to Benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a HUGE Success!

Fourth and fifth grade students at Jefferson School recently participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Math-A-Thon program and raised $4,325 to help kids battling cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.  Through the Math-A-Thon program, students not only build and practice essential math skills covered in the state standardized tests, they also learn that even as kids they can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

The students raising the largest donations were Megan Elefante ($146) in Mrs. Reul’s fifth grade math class and Michael Breedlove ($140) in Mrs. Morse’s fourth grade class.  Classes earning the largest donations were Mrs. Tschosik’s fourth grade class ($714), Mrs. Andersen’s fourth grade class ($680),  and the fifth grade students of Mrs. Reul and Ms. Shafer ($596.25).

We are so proud of our students for embracing Math-A-Thon and raising critical funds for St. Jude.  Every dollar raised will help support the St. Jude mission of finding cures and saving the lives of children in communities around the world.  Thank you to the students, staff, and Dixon community for being so generous during the holiday season.
