S.W.A.P. Program Off To A Great Start and Continuing To Take Applications!

The SWAP (Student Work Assistance Program) has been off and running since the moment school got out in June.  It’s still not too late to have your child “earn” his or her athletic fees for the 2010-2011 school year.

The purpose of SWAP is to allow student athletes to swap time spent working for Dixon Public Schools for sports fees via our school work program.  Athletic participation fees are not to be waived under Board Policy 4:140.  In an effort to assist families in covering these costs, SWAP was created.

The Big Read Creates Readers, Writers, Artists, & Rappers

This year’s Sauk Valley Big Read gave DPS students the opportunity to be readers, writers, artists, and rappers as they participated in various activities associated with The Call of the Wild by Jack London and Akiak by Robert Blake.  The Big Read is a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in cooperation with Arts Midwest “designed to restore reading to the center of American culture” (“About the Big Read”).  The Sterling Public Library applied for the Big Read grant to promote reading in the Sauk Valley.  Schools and public libraries in the area received books and other materials from the grant.
At Washington School, Mrs. Brantner read the book, Akiak by Robert Blake to each class during their library visit.  She also talked to the students about the Iditarod dog sled race.  Students especially loved learning about the dogs and appreciated the large stuffed dog that sat with them as they listened to the story.

What is PBIS at Dixon Elementary Schools?

In order for a child to be successful in school, they need: a plan, a friend, and an adult who cares that they are there.  This is exactly what PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions Supports) puts into action.  PBIS defines expected behaviors, teaches or reteaches expected behaviors, practices and models expected behaviors. It also celebrates displays of these expected behaviors.
