Red, White and Blue Quilt Print
Written by C. Ramirez

At the Illinois Reading Conference back in March I, Carie Ramirez of Washington Elementary, had the chance to go to a session with, Author/Illustrator/Song-writer, Debbie Clement. It was in her session that she introduced me to a book that will now and forever be a favorite! The book is titled Red, White and Blue. The book is about our country and what represents our country and how to say thank you for all those who have fought for our freedom. The Author did all of the illustrations by making a quilt piece for each page. This prompted me to have my class make their own quilt to go with the book. We started by marble painting (white paint on red and blue paper and then white paper with red and blue paint). Then I cut out the stripes and the stars and then my students glued the stars and stripes onto the other pages. Along with making the quilt, they have learned words by singing them (there is a CD in the back of the book) and they have also learned to sign the song.

Two New Clubs At Jefferson Print
Written by vboss

It is with pleasure that we announce that Jefferson School will have the addition of two new Clubs coming to our school for the 2011-12 school year. Early Act, an extension of the Rotary Club, will start an inaugural year at Jefferson School for this upcoming school year. Early Act is a school-wide service club that was developed for elementary students’ ages 5 to 13. It will be sponsored by our local Rotary club and will provide our students with knowledge on the basic ideals of Rotary and provide a foundation to entry into more advanced Rotary sponsored clubs. The mission of Early Act is to promote goodwill, understanding, and peace through active participation of its student members. The skills acquired from Early Act will develop committed citizens and effective leaders with the ability to improve the quality of life of their school, local, and global communities. Jefferson is also proud to welcome the Kiwanis sponsored club, K-Kids. K-Kids is a “student-led” community service club, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body. Members will learn character building, inclusiveness, caring, and leadership.  Mrs. Vanessa Rubright, Jefferson School nurse, will be the school sponsor for the K-Kids program. Information on the faculty sponsor for Early Act and how to sign up for each of these clubs will be forthcoming. Preliminary plans are being made to have representatives of both clubs in attendance during school registration. These student opportunities are a welcome addition to our school.

6th Grade Goes Green Print
Friday, May 20 2011 11:07
The 6th grade students are participating in an on-going 6th Grade Goes Green project to help clean up the outside area of our east wing at Reagan Middle School.  In this project, we have been looking to revive the barren outer east wing that is an eye-sore to us all, with flora that would thrive and beautify this side of the building.

We students have had and will continue to have hands on educational skills in the area of planning and planting.  We’ve researched plants that would thrive in this area as well as soil type, measured how much area we have to use, and figured out how much this would all cost.  We also wrote a grant trying to get money for the project; unfortunately, we were unsuccessful at getting that contribution, but we are not giving up!

We are hoping to find many people, including students, staff, and parents, to help us with this project by donating any available plants, money, or supplies.  This would be greatly appreciated by all.  If you have any questions or are interested in donating, please contact Mrs. Ford, Miss Weaver, Mr. Ferguson, Mrs. Wargo or Mrs. Shomaker.  Thank you for your support!
