Debbie Clement came to visit students and staff Washington School on Wednesday, April 24. Debbie has recorded 6 CD's of original music, wrote and illustrated 3 picture books and created an award winning DVD. Debbie taught the children some of her songs and got them up dancing to the music. Then she shared her three picture books and taught the children how to sign the words. She also put on a show for the community at Sauk Valley Community College that night, where children again were engaged in song and dance. She had picture books and CD's available for purchase that night and students were able to get their book personalized by Debbie! If you missed the show or didn't get a chance to purchase any of her materials, you can look her up on YouTube or go to her website. www.rainbowswithinreach.com.

Dixon Public Schools is now taking applications for SWAP (Student Worker Assistance Program) for summer 2013 work.  SWAP allows students to work off their athletic fees by working various maintenance, custodial, and summer school jobs throughout the district.

SWAP applications can be picked up and dropped off starting Friday, May 3rd in Dr. Grady’s Office, the Athletic Office at DHS, or to Mrs. Sward at Reagan Middle School.  SWAP applications can also be downloaded online at www.dixonschools.org.   The due date for SWAP applications is 4 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2013.  Any applications received after this date will be put on our waiting list, and are not guaranteed work during the summer.

SWAP applications for incoming freshman will be mailed home and should be received by Friday, May 3rd.  Parents of incoming freshman can also download an application online and return it to Mrs. Sward at Reagan Middle School.

There will be a student and parent informational meeting on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the DHS auditorium.  This meeting is mandatory for incoming freshman and students new to the SWAP program.  It is recommended for those returning to the program.

We look forward to working with students interested in giving back to their school, community, and family with this valuable program.

In honor of National Poetry Month, the 8th grade students at RMS immersed themselves in poetry.  Over several weeks, they read and wrote many different types of poems, including limericks, pantoums, sonnets, odes, free verse, ekphrasis, elegies, couplets, etc. Poets such as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, William Stafford, Billy Collins, Taylor Mali, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and many more were in the spotlight daily as students learned about their lives and read their poetry. Not only did students learn about reading and writing poetry, they also learned about performing poetry.
